Meaning of Mahamrityunjay Mantra

The literal meaning of the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is as follows:

Um aum = Aum / holy collection of Aum in Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism & Sikhism

त्र्यम्बकम् tryambakam = three-eyed (prosecution)

त्रि tri = "three"

Aka म्बक ambaka = "iso"

यजामहे yajāmahe = "siyakhonza, siyahlabela" (1st person plural present indicative ātmanepada of * yaj-)

सुगन्धिम् sugandhim = "a person who smells good, who is handsome, who is very high" (litigation),

पुष्टिवर्धनम् puṣṭi + vardhanam = "provider of food, wealth, perfection" (compound name, case of suspicion), literally "he who is in charge of food growth"

पुष्टि puṣṭi = "food, increase, wealth, perfection"

वर्धन vardhana = "expansion, growth"

उर्वारुकम् urvārukam = "fruit, cucumber variety" (neuter, case nominativ);

Iva व iva = "as"

to devanagari listed together as उर्वारुकमिव urvārukamiva

बन्धनान् bandhanān = "from bondage, from the stump / stem" (a false case, the end is actually -āt, which changes to -ān because of the sand)

Note: the bandhanāt here means "from the stem". Therefore, read also urvārukam thorn, "as the fruit from the stem"; The earlier etymologically original meaning of "from slavery" is heard here as the fruit is a metaphor for the worshiper being freed from the bondage of death, see below.

मृत्योः mṛtyoḥ = "from death" (case from a treeḥ)

मुक्षीय mukṣīya = "I can be released / released" (first person in current position ātmanepada root muc-)

in sandhi, the last two words became मृत्योर्मुक्षीय mṛtyormukṣīya

मा ऽमृतात् mā 'mṛtāt = "not (mā) from immortality (amṛtāt)" (ablative case from amṛtam): negative particle mā is also built together with mukya.

the last two words became मा ऽमृतात् mā-amṛtāt

Significance of Mahamrityunjay Mantra

It is said to be beneficial for mental, emotional, and physical health and to be a mokra mantra that offers long life and immortality.

According to some plans, the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra was used by many rishis and Sati at a time when Chandra was suffering from the curse of Prajapati Daksha.

By reading this mantra, the effect of Daksha's curse, which could cause her to die, subsided, and Shiva then took Chandra and placed it on her head.

This mantra is addressed to Shiva by avoiding sudden death. It is also sung during Vibhuti anointing on various parts of the Body and is used in Japa or Homa (havan) to get the desired results.

While its power to protect and guide the initiates re-connects understanding with their deep and lasting nature and the repetition of the mantra forms Japa, its practice that enhances focus leading to a change in awareness.

While the Gayatri Mantra is for cleansing and spiritual guidance, the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is designed for healing and rejuvenation.
